Models for climate, biodiversity and evolution

Studies of “fossil” DNA from the basal ice from periods with rapid climate change can link climate models with models for how organisms evolve as a result of climate change. The studies provide the opportunity for understanding more factors for why species adapt, become extinct or arise in periods with climate change.

The combination of interdisciplinary models makes it possible to assess the risk of extinction and adaption potential of different types of ecosystems and their species. The interdisciplinary approach also makes it possible to describe the interaction between ecosystems and climate at different levels. For example, how rapidly ecosystems with specific characteristics of precipitation and temperature can be replaced by other ecosystems with characteristics that interact with changing climatic conditions and biodiversity.

By comparing the overall climate parameters with more local precipitation and natural response, researchers can study the dynamics between these interdependent systems.
